Peer Mentoring

The Humanities Peer Mentoring scheme gives all new students a Mentor, a second or final year student, to help them navigate the university. Your Mentor will be able to give you the benefit of their experience and knowledge base and will be a point of contact for careers-related and other questions.

About the Scheme

All new Humanities students are automatically enrolled into the scheme as Mentees so that they can take full advantage of the extra help and support during their transition into University life here at Southampton.

Peer Mentoring is offered over Semester One. Fortnightly meetings will be available for mentoring groups to meet up in an informal and friendly manner where students can ask questions they would feel less comfortable asking a member of staff.

This process not only benefits new students, but Mentors can benefit too. Students who apply to be Peer Mentors and are successful will receive detailed training and support throughout the scheme from the Coordinator. It is an excellent experience for students to put on their CV and use in interviews, and will develop employability skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, organisation, and leadership. Furthermore, Mentors will receive a certificate signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and those nominated by their Mentees or by the Peer Mentoring Coordinator will be up for the chance of winning a prize for ‘Star Mentor’.

To find out how to join, or for more information on the scheme please contact Peer Mentoring Coordinator.

If you think you could be a Peer Mentor then have a look at the Mentor Handbook in the Useful Downloads section to find out more.
