Perception of nutritional supplements is different between patients and professionals

Published: 7 September 2018

Recent work published in Acta Paediatrica from the Southampton PIBD team has found differences between the way children, families and professionals view nutritional supplements in Crohn’s disease.

Nutrition is a key part of the treatment of IBD in childhood and it is important to include everyone in the discussion around what is best for the individual.

This study highlighted the extensive practice of nutritional supplements for children in clinical remission, which may not always be nutritionally indicated. Overall patient preference was for personalised dietary advice rather than broad nutritional supplements (given as specialised drinks).
