Black History Month: Hampshire's PCC and the ICJR

Published: 31 October 2013

Hampshire's Police Crime Commissioner Simon Hayes and the Institute of Criminal Justice Research at the University of Southampton recently hosted a lecture by Professor Simon Holdaway as part of Black History Month.

The focus of Professor Holdaway's lecture was to explore the issues around the low numbers of BME groups joining the police service. In his lecture Professor Holdaway, a former police officer, discussed his extensive research about the experiences of BME police officers in the UK. His research for more than a decade has been based on interviews with serving officers throughout England and Wales. In this lecture he described changes in their views following their experiences of being police officers, and crucially, of being BME police officers.
