Estimated food allergy across Europe
The EuroPrevall Study was a collaborative multi-centre study of research institutions from 9 countries in Europe. They were chosen to give a good geographical spread across Europe to assess allergy prevalence.
The regions were Nordic (Reykjavik, Iceland), Maritime (Amsterdam, Netherlands and Southampton, United Kingdom), Central Europe (Berlin, Germany; Lodz, Poland and Vilnius, Lithuania) and the Mediterranean region (Madrid, Spain; Milan, Italy and Athens, Greece).
Initial results show that food allergy rates differ across Europe.
- Of the 9 European centres in involved in the study The UK had the highest rate of food allergy to cows milk, with the Netherlands having the second highest rate. Greece had the lowest level of allergy to cows milk.
- Reactions to Hens egg were also highest in the UK with The Netherlands second and Iceland third. Greece also has the lowest level of Hens egg allergy.
- Fish allergy is much more common in Iceland than any other country involved in the Europe-wide study.
- The Netherlands seems to have the highest rate of peanut allergy.
