Becoming an IfLS Member

IfLS membership is intended to be as open as possible to colleagues of principal investigator (PI) status who are running active research programmes aligned with IfLS' commitment to interdisciplinary research. IfLS Membership is independent of faculty associations and all grants and related administrative matters continue to go through the faculties. It is anticipated that IfLS Members will engage in interdisciplinary activities across the campus and alert the IfLS Director to interesting developments worthy of encouragement and support.

University of Southampton colleagues who wish to become a Member of the IfLS should send a brief CV, including details of current research grants and publications, to IfLSAdmin@soton.ac.uk

IfLS Membership Benefits:
1. The IfLS has a yearly allocation of PhD positions which we split by providing half support. There is a call for relevant projects and strong candidates at the start of each academic year. IfLS members will be able to compete for this support.  Details are available at Education and Training.

2. The IfLS has been in receipt of HEIF and EPSRC money for summer interns and pilot projects.  IfLS Members will be invited to bid for future funds received.

3. IfLS support for workshops and conferences at Southampton: Members are encouraged to propose suitable workshops and meetings where IfLS resources can be used in support. Details of IfLS events can be viewed on our events page

4. Members are encouraged and will be administratively supported where possible in establishing working interdisciplinary groups within their and the IfLS sphere of interest. The Institute's interdisciplinary research themes are structured around four grand challenges:  New Pathways to Health, Life Technologies, Global Change: Systems and Cycles, Human Nexus.  The Steering Group encourage Members to put forward suggestions for new themes via IfLSAdmin@soton.ac.uk .

5. The IfLS Website - www.soton.ac.uk/ifls  - serves as a point of contact and a projection of Life Sciences activities across the University. All Members are encouraged to submit items of note, grants awarded, prizes, seminars and publications as well as input on structure and functionality.

IfLS Membership Conditions:
As the IfLS is not a Faculty with a revenue stream it is very important that we document successes to support the interdisciplinary strategic vision of the University.  Documenting success creates a dynamic brand that can be utilised by colleagues as support for grant applications.  To this end we request that our members send us brief notes on cross campus research and grant applications that can be tagged as IfLS orientated. Please send this important information to IfLSAdmin@soton.ac.uk

IfLS Members are asked to acknowledge IfLS membership on the address line of publications where the research subject is appropriate: Institute for Life Sciences, University of Southampton, UK
