The University of Southampton
Institute for Life Sciences

Our Vision

Having recognised that many of our most pressing societal problems have solutions spanning academic disciplines, the University has invested heavily in the field of interdisciplinarity.

The Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS) exists to foster cross-campus interdisciplinary research links related to the life sciences. The Institute is a central point of organisation and leadership, with research interests spanning key academic units. It provides a novel environment for the development of researchers literate in more than one core science and engineering discipline. These highly skilled individuals are better equipped to address the grand challenges facing scientists in the 21st century, and to respond to these challenges as innovators and leaders of interdisciplinary teams.

The IfLS is grounded around 4 grand challenges which form the strategic focus of interdisciplinary life sciences research within the Institute.  These challenges are:

Life Technologies
