Dr Bill Brocklesby is part of the Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Southampton.

My research focuses on high-resolution imaging, from scanning tunnelling microscopy to new techniques in X-ray imaging. The applications of these imaging techniques to solve biological problems is an exciting area, and imaging will always drive new developments in life sciences

Bill Brocklesby’s research has centered around novel imaging & microscopy techniques in the visible and XUV spectral regions over the last 10-15 years. He is at present working on coherent diffractive imaging (CDI) of nanoscale systems using XUV radiation generated by high-power ultrashort pulse lasers, and also has extensive research experience in Raman microscopy, near-field techniques such as scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM), atomic force microscopy, & scanning tunneling microscopy. His doctoral work was done at the University of Oxford, followed by a post-doc at AT&T Bell laboratories in New jersey, USA. He is at present employed as an associate professor at the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), University of Southampton. He has supervised 22 PhD students (5 current), and teaches photonics within the School of Physics & Astronomy, and is Director of Programmes for the ORC’s Masters courses.
