Wessex Life Sciences Alliance

The purpose of the Wessex Life Sciences Alliance is to build upon the interdisciplinary activities of the University’s Institute for Life Sciences; enhance education, research and employment opportunities in the Salisbury region; strengthen the translation of research at the Life Sciences interface to improve health, and contribute to the regional and national economy.

The active collaboration in Life Sciences between Southampton, Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust and Porton Down has been strengthened recently by:

-- A donation to the University of Southampton to support PhD studentships between Southampton and Wiltshire in the field of vaccinology and genomics.

-- Establishment of a regional vaccine centre between Porton Down and Southampton.

-- Appointment of a new chair in Infectious Diseases at the University of Southampton, with existing collaborations with Public Health England at Porton Down.

-- Embracing the Wessex Life Sciences Alliance as the theme for the annual IfLS conference in September 2012.
