Nursing leads the way for Southampton in QS World Rankings by Subject
Nursing at Southampton has risen to 9th in the world according to the QS World Rankings by Subject 2018 leading a group of five subject areas where the University is ranked in the top 50 globally.
Two years ago, Nursing at Southampton was ranked 14th in the world two years ago, climbing to 10th last year. Nursing’s excellent performance this year is powered by a high reputational rating amongst academic peers around the world (87.7 out of 100) and very high scores for research citations (95.2 out of 100) and ‘h-index’ (91.9 out of 100) which measures the productivity and impact of work published by scientists and scholars in the subject.
Professor Mandy Fader, Dean of Health Sciences said: “It’s fantastic to see that our commitment to excellence in nursing education and research is reflected in this latest QS World Ranking. Our nursing research is having far-reaching impact across the globe from influencing policy in cancer care and survivorship to influencing practice in preventing pressure ulcers using innovative technologies.”
For the first time ever, Southampton has also cracked the top 100 in two of the five broad subject areas covered by QS, rising to 95th in both Life Sciences & Medicine and Natural Sciences.
Professor Peter Smith, Director of the University’s Institute for Life Sciences said: “This is a marvellous and timely recognition of the strength of the Life Sciences and Natural Sciences at Southampton. These are both areas of strategic importance to the University and are clearly playing an active role in building our international reputation.”
Joining Nursing in the QS global top 50 within their respective areas are:
- Archaeology, 29th
- Earth Sciences, 36th
- Mining Engineering, 42nd
- Geography, 46th
The following subjects placed outside of the top 50 but made the QS top 100 where no specific numerical rating is given:
- Computer Science
- Electrical Engineering
- Environmental Sciences
- Mechanical Engineering
- Medicine
- Performing Arts (Music)
- Physics
- Sport
- Statistics
The QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings reflect internationally-recognised indicators of excellence to rate and rank the world’s leading universities. This year’s results continue to build on the University’s strong showing in the QS subject rankings last year, driven by Southampton’s continually improving academic reputation.
Last June, Southampton ranked 102nd amongst institutions overall in the QS World University Rankings, placing 18th amongst UK universities ranked.
