Weird ion, weird ion channel: A new family membrane exporters for resistance of fluoride toxicity

Until two years ago, fluoride anion was not considered to play any significant role in biological membrane transport function. But recent discoveries have identified two separate and distinct families of F- exporters that unicellular micro-organisms use to protect themselves against environmental F- levels. This talk will describe several unprecedented functional and structural features of one of these - the "Fluc" family of F- -specific ion channels.
