New Pathways to Health

Health and access to healthcare is one of the pillars of modern society. Societal demands for improved healthcare drive research and innovation within the University and its NHS partners, especially the University Hospital Southampton NHS Trust. These pathways will allow unique collaborations to forge between University academics and NHS clinicians to understand, diagnose and treat diseases within key healthcare areas of national and global relevance including cancer, infection, nutrition, microbiology, respiratory and degenerative diseases.

Aims:

The aims of the pathway are to create novel solutions for everyday problems. The IfLS will encourage the breadth of the University of Southampton to tackle key healthcare challenges, by generating new University partnerships across the Wessex Life Sciences Alliance, the University Hospital of Southampton NHS Trust and the Southampton Centre for Biomedical Research. By encouraging researchers into the healthcare arena the theme will develop new methods to understand, diagnose, treat and prevent disease.

Impact:

These strategies will improve our understanding of complex healthcare disorders with the aim of improving the patient pathway.

Themes under this grand challenge include:

Biofilms
Neuroscience & Degenerative Diseases
Translational Immunology: Understanding and mobilising our natural defences.
