ILAWS members teach communications law in Malawi

Published: 14 February 2014

ILAWS members Professor David Mellor OBE and Neil Brown taught communications law and regulation to representatives of regulators, telecommunications companies and government ministries in Lilongwe, Malawi.

The four day course introduced delegates to the fundamental principles of regulation in the context of a developing country’s communications systems, and how both regulators and communications providers might seek to overcome obstacles to effective competition.

Focusing on how effective regulation can achieve economic advantages, at both a national and international level, the teaching was informed by the ILAWS members’ careers in international communications companies, enriching academic theories of regulation with practical guidance and experiences.

The course is available to students around the world as the telecommunications policy module of the Southampton Law School’s distance learning LLM in IT and telecoms law.
