Professor Uta Kohl

Uta joined Southampton Law School in 2018 after having worked at the Department of Law and Criminology of Aberystwyth University for quite a few years. She has written extensively on internet governances issues, including the monograph Jurisdiction and the Internet (CUP, 2007), the edited collection The Net and the Nation State (CUP, 2017) and the co-authored textbook Information Technology Law (5thed, Routledge, 2016) as well as on corporate governance, e.g. ‘Territoriality and Globalization’ in OUP Research Handbook on Jurisdiction (2018). She organised a Google-funded symposium on internet jurisdiction in 2014, and have been the co-opted Human Rights Trustee on the Board of the Internet Watch Foundation since 2014.

Her research interests lie in two broad areas: internet governance and corporate governance, with a particular focus on their international dimensions. She has written on online jurisdiction in public and private international law, intermediary liability, the regulation of online speech as well as corporate human rights abuses.

Uta is currently exploring the concept of territory in the information age with a particular focus on data as a commodity in the international trading environment. What are the implications of the assertion that data is the 'new oil', assuming that it is valid, and how are these manifested in law and the transnational legal context?
