A guest lecture organized by Dr Eleonora Rosati and iCLIC for the Intellectual Property Law students

The rise of ‘fashion law’ as a self-standing area of study and practice is arguably a recent development, also prompted by a realization of how the success of any businesses in the fashion sector depends on compliance with different laws and regulations, as well as the availability of certain types of protection and the feasibility and effectiveness of rights enforcement.

This guest lecture will consist of two parts: in the first part, Rosie Burbidge will outline some of the most pressing issues relating to trade mark protection in the fashion sector; in the second part, Giulia Gasparin will discuss the role of an in-house legal counsel working in fashion and the challenges and opportunities of e-commerce.

About the speakers:

Rosie Burbidge

Rosie Burbidge is a partner at Gunnercooke LLP and the author of European Fashion Law: A Practical Guide from Start-up to Global Success (forthcoming c. Feb 2019). She is an English lawyer specialising in intellectual property law. Rosie is known for her regular blogs on trade mark and design issues for the popular IPKat blog and has been a thought leader on the opportunities for new technology by the fashion industry.

Rosie’s career began over a decade ago at Olswang which included a secondment to eBay. This gave her an excellent grounding in the legal issues facing the creative industries including the impact of technology. Rosie then moved on to Rouse, the international network of law firms and consultancies with longstanding expertise in Asia, the Middle East and now Africa. This gave her exposure to the the legal issues facing business on a global basis, particularly the many complexities of doing business in China. She also had a brief secondment to Richemont where she learned first hand about the IP issues facing luxury brands.

Before joining Gunnercooke LLP as a partner in 2018, Rosie worked for a range of fashion and technology clients. Her practice primarily focused on resolving disputes relating to design, copyright and trade mark law. In her spare time she likes writing books about fashion law and keeping up with the latest legal technology trends.
