Professor Rob Merkin and Johanna Hjalmarsson speakers at the Inaugural Conference of the new Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transportation Law

Professor Rob Merkin and Johanna Hjalmarsson participated as invited speakers in the inaugural conference of the new Hong Kong Centre for Maritime and Transportation Law at City University School of Law.

The two-day conference on maritime law was held in connection with the inauguration ceremony for the Centre, with invited speakers and other guests from Hong Kong, mainland China, Australia, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and USA. The University of Southampton was honoured to be the only European university represented.

The conference covered a wide range of maritime law topics from the Rotterdam Rules to insolvency and passenger liabilities, with a large number of excellent and very enjoyable contributions. Rob Merkin spoke on piracy and marine insurance law and Johanna Hjalmarsson spoke on third party claims against marine insurers.
The Centre was also presented with a mascot for its maritime law mooting team.

Johanna is the Lloyd's List Research Fellow in Maritime and Commercial Law.

After completing service as a tingsnotarie (Junior Judge) in her native Sweden, Johanna specialised in law reform, spending several years with the United Nations International Drug Control Programme and with the Office of the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has been with the University of Southampton since 2004.

Research interests
Marine insurance, insurance, carriage of goods by sea, enforcement of maritime claims, law of the sea.
