Postgraduate researcher wins major award

Published: 16 February 2015

We are delighted to congratulate Insurance Law Research Group Member Dr James Dingjing Huang on winning the Chinese Education Bureau Postgraduate Research Award 2015.

The award is given each year to 30 particularly deserving postgraduate researchers, in any discipline, at UK universities. Thousands of applicants are narrowed down to a small number whose efforts in in spreading Chinese culture and science abroad are recognised in this way.

Reasons are not given for the award, but Dingjing Huang attributes his success in no small measure to his work on the Chinese-English Insurance Law Conference, organised at Southampton University in 2013 and the publication of the conference papers, Insurance Law in China, of which he is an editor, in 2014. Dingjing Huang completed his PhD at the end of 2014 but continues to teach admiralty law and recently contributed as a volunteer to the first Insurance Law Moot.

Jenny Jingbo Zhang, now a Lecturer at the Law School, won the same award in 2014. She was the only winner at Southampton, and in 2015 only Dingjing Huang and one other postgraduate (in a science discipline) have won the award. For Southampton Law Postgraduate researchers to have won this coveted and prestigious award in two consecutive years is a tremendous honour and testimony to the success of the continuing collaboration with the Southampton Confucius Institute on conferences and books.
