Project title: Changes in 3D Lung Morphology due to ADAM33 Deficiency Using an Animal Asthma Model
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects some 300 million people throughout the world. It is a manageable, but incurable disease with symptoms that range in severity from person to person. It is estimated that some 6000 people die from asthma in the UK and USA alone, with mortality rates greatly increased in less developed countries.
This project aims to test the theory that asthma can be caused by genetic factors and also to develop a set of tools and techniques for describing and measuring the physiological effects of asthma in rodent lungs using 3D Micro Computed Tomography with the goal of making further research faster. Bronchial airway wall thickness, bronchial branching angles and positions and blood vessel density will be measured at every stage of the branching lung structure.
