Synopsis: Raman spectroscopy has the potential to provide near immediate and minimally invasive assessments of tissue type and disease state. This talk will discuss laboratory results looking at lymphomas and oesophageal cancers and describe some of the work going on to develop miniature probes for in vivo use. The potential of Raman for 'optical biopsies' of brain tissue will also be discussed.

Dr John Day,Interface Analysis Centre, University of Bristol,John C.C. Day received a BSc in Physics from the University of Southampton. He then worked at Sira Ltd on scientific instrument development including the design of the UK National Humidity Standard. He received an MSc in Physics of Materials followed by a PhD in Physics from the University of Bristol in 1987. He is now a Senior Fellow in the Interface Analysis Centre in The School of Physics at Bristol currently working on various medical device development projects but particularly on the design and fabrication of miniature Raman probes for in vivo use.
