Captain Richard Pilley

Background

Captain Pilley started his seagoing career with BP Shipping.  In 1972 he was recruited by P&O Bulk Shipping and was soon after promoted to command. He served as master for several years mainly on LPG and LNG tankers, trading worldwide.

In 1982, he left the sea and joined Thos. Miller & Co., managers of the UK P&I Club. Shortly after, he was appointed a claims syndicate manager and a Director of Thomas Miller P&I. In 1990, he was made responsible for developing the UK Club's ship inspection programme which was aimed at encouraging higher standards of ship operation and maintenance and ensuring proper compliance with Classification Society Rules and the International Conventions. Until his retirement from Millers, he was a member of the General Committee of Lloyds Register and of the British Technical Committee of ABS. He is a Younger Brother of the Corporation of Trinity House.

Since joining the Institute of Maritime Law, he has been involved in lecturing, writing and consultancy work. He is a regular speaker on the IML Short Course and has carried out consultancy work for City Solicitors as well as the Maritime Coastguard Agency, through his association with A.D. Little.
