Dr Jingbo Zhang, Professor James Davey and Professor Filippo Lorenzon of Southampton Law School attended the Sino-UK Maritime Justice and Maritime Arbitration Forum in Xiamen, China on 16 November.

Professor Davey presented a paper on arbitration and the doctrine of precedent and Professor Lorenzon discussed current trends in interpreting maritime contracts. The conference was called to discuss the relationship between the English and Chinese legal systems in the mutual recognition of arbitral awards in light of London’s place as the global centre for maritime arbitration.

The event was hosted by senior members of the Chinese judiciary, including members of the Chinese Supreme Court and the maritime courts of Xiamen, Shanghai, Wuhan, Ningbo and Guangzhou. The University of Southampton was the only British University invited to contribute, emphasising its predominance in maritime law, and was sponsored by the British Consulate General in Guangzhou.
