Event details

The Institute of Maritime Law, along with colleagues from the Law School and across the University will be holding a workshop looking at Atmospheric Pollution.

Atmospheric pollution is an important problem affecting human health globally. Port cities face additional challenges due to atmospheric pollutants introduced by port activities including land and sea transport emissions. For Southampton, atmospheric pollution has become a defining problem of our age, which will affect society in profound and complex ways through both its effects and our responses.

This workshop will bring together researchers and local stakeholders combining scientific understanding of the pollution sources, identifying legal and policy measures that should be introduced, promoting innovative engineering solutions.

PROGRAMME THEMES

The workshop is a unique opportunity to share ideas and research from interdisciplinary researchers working on atmospheric pollution. Speakers will give 20 minute presentations with Q&A afterwards. The sessions will cover a diverse range of topics spanning multiple disciplines (combinging the strengths of the Law School in maritime, environmental, trade and ethical matters and linking with engineering, logistics, medicine and social science), will include:

Theme 1: Atmosphere Pollution Mapping - How does Southampton Fare?
Theme 2: The Maritime Sector and Atmospheric Pollution
Theme 3: Atmospheric Pollution and the Broader Transportation Sector
