About the course
This innovative and wide-ranging course will take you through the key elements of both dry and wet shipping law, taking into account the most recent developments in these areas. The legal framework for cargo claims will involve a detailed look at the scope of application, liability regime, and limitation of liability under the Hague and Hague-Visby Rules. The most frequently litigated aspects of the law and practice of charterparties will be covered in the sessions on laytime and demurrage. The course will introduce you to the somewhat understated topic of general average providing a useful link between dry and wet shipping law. There will be an opportunity to cover pre-trial security in the form of ship arrest and the English law on arbitration, reflecting on the attractions of London as an arbitration seat.

Speakers
Dr Filip Saranovic
Dr Filip Saranovic is a Lecturer in Commercial and Maritime Law and a Member of the Operations Committee of the Institute of Maritime Law at the University of Southampton. Filip is the coordinator of the IML's Wednesday Practitioner Series and a regular lecturer on the IML's world renowned Maritime Law Short Course. Filip is currently completing a book titled Freezing Injunctions in Private International Law (under contract with Cambridge University Press).
Dr Jenny Jingbo Zhang
Dr Jingbo (Jenny) Zhang is a Lecturer in Commercial and Maritime Law and a member of the Institute of Maritime Law at Southampton Law School. Her research interests are primarily in the fields of international sale of goods, international trade finance, carriage of goods by sea and marine insurance. Apart from teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Southampton, she is also actively involved in delivering training to both academic and industrial partners.
Dr Liang Zhao
Dr Liang Zhao studied law in Dalian Maritime University, China and received LL.M. in Maritime Law from University of Southampton and PhD from the University of Hong Kong.
He was a Visiting Scholar of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in 2008, an Academic Visitor of City Law School of City University London in 2014 and Senior Research Fellow of the Maritime Law Centre of the Faculty of Law of National University of Singapore in 2016 and 2019.
He is a member of China Maritime Law Association and Hong Kong Maritime Law Association.
Dr Alexandros Ntovas
Dr Ntovas first joined the University of Southampton in 2007 as a doctoral scholarship recipient to pursue his PhD, receiving immediately after its completion a full-time law lectureship in the Law School, where he was also a Governing Board Member of the Institute of Maritime Law. In 2016 he moved to the University of London, at Queen Mary’s Centre for Commercial Law Studies and the King’s College London, Dickson Poon School of Law, where he extensively lectured, developed new programmes, researched and provided consultancy in the areas of shipping, offshore energy and natural resources, law of the sea and ocean governance. In 2019 he rejoined the University of Southampton Law School as Associate Professor of Maritime Law, at the level of Readership, and the Director of the Institute of Maritime Law (2020–2023).
Robert Veal
Robert Veal is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Southampton and an academic member of the Institute of Maritime Law. He is a double graduate of Southampton having undertaken the LL.B and LL.M in Maritime Law which is passed with distinction.
Robert's research focuses on regulatory and liability issues pertaining to the use of autonomous and remote-control technology in ships as well as the operation of smaller unmanned maritime vehicles.
Robert is a member of the MCA's Maritime Autonomy Regulations Laboratory (MARLab) Advisory Board and is a member of the UK's Marine Autonomous Systems Regulatory Working Group (MASRWG). Robert has also represented the Comité Maritime International at the IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MASS Working Group).
Robert has taught both students and professionals across a range of maritime legal areas but principally wet shipping and admiralty.
Sir Bernard Eder
Sir Bernard Eder is an international arbitrator/mediator based at 24 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London and a member of the Institute of Maritime Law. He previously practised as a barrister at Essex Court Chambers specialising in commercial litigation and international arbitration. In 2011, he was appointed a Judge of the High Court of England and Wales. He resigned from the Bench in April 2015. During that time, he sat mainly in the Commercial Court in London. In 2015, he was appointed an International Judge at the Singapore International Commercial Court – and re-appointed for a further term in 2018. He was formerly Senior Editor of Scrutton on Charterparties and Chair of ARIAS(UK). Over the years, he has been appointed as arbitrator in over 300 international arbitrations.
Antigoni D. Fakonti
Antigoni Fakonti is a qualified lawyer, Executive Director and the Head of Legal of Globe Invest Limited. She is recognized as a knowledgeable, internationally experienced attorney with a ten-year experience in the fields of corporate, tax, trusts, finance/banking, funds, shipping and energy. She is advising on international wealth management, planning and tax structuring. She deals with large complex multi-sourced project financings and securities structures, IPOs, local and cross-border mergers, takeovers and acquisitions, incorporation, licensing and running of companies, trusts and funds (AIFs).
She has an LLB and an LLM in Commercial Law from the University of Bristol, UK. She has gained additional professional qualifications in tax, trusts, finance regulations and mediation. These include the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (Chartered Institute of Taxation, UK), the Financial Services Regulatory Framework: Advanced (CySEC) certification and the Mediator (CEDR) certification.
She is also a member of several professional associations, including STEP, ITPA and WISTA, the author of articles and legal texts and a university lecturer. She has been a speaker and panelist in several conferences in Cyprus and abroad.
Dr Sonia Ajini
Dr Sonia Ajini is a legal professional with many years of experience. She is a holder of a Master at Law degree, Doctor at Law degree and an LLM degree in maritime law. Sonia was a founding member, vice-president and director of Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association Cyprus (WISTA Cyprus) and a committee member of the Slovak-Cypriot Friendship Society. Sonia is presently a Vice President of the Cyprus-Slovak Business Association. She was also a director of the Cyprus Arbitration and Mediation Centre, its general secretary and company secretary. To-date she has been heavily involved and dealt with various areas of law. She is a managing director of a Cyprus based company Ajilex Ltd which she founded in 2018 and a board member of various Cyprus companies. Moreover, she is also an associate lecturer of an LLM shipping law module at the University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus and a Special Agent of the Liberian Maritime Registry for Cyprus.
She was admitted to Cyprus Bar Association in 2021.
