Event details
The IML Annual lecture has been a showcase event for the Institute since 1982, and has been the forum for academic delivery of innovative and challenging papers to practitioners and the shipping industry. Many of the lectures have gone on to be published in Lloyd’s Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly. The Lecture is followed by a reception which gives the opportunity for attendees to talk to the speaker and also get to know the members of the Institute and network with each other. It is our way of bringing our research interests to the City, linking practitioners and the academic world. We regularly attract around over 100 guests each year from around the industry.
“Party Freedom in the Decarbonisation Era: the Intersection between Contract and Regulation.”
This year's lecture will be by James M. Turner KC – Quadrant Chambers
James is a well-known commercial shipping silk, with over three decades’ experience across the field, from ship design and construction, through chartering and cargo disputes, to casualties and recycling, as well as related financial and offshore construction claims.
He has written and spoken on regulatory topics including decommissioning, and international recycling and decarbonisation legislation. He was shortlisted for Legal 500 Environmental/Sustainability: Bar Champion of the Year 2024, in recognition of his thought leadership in these areas.
In 2021, Lloyd’s List named James as one of its Top 10 Maritime Lawyers. In 2022, he acted pro bono in support of one of three judicial reviews of the so-called “pushbacks policy” directed at cross-Channel migrants, which the government withdrew shortly before the challenges to it were to be heard.
