About this course
This certificate in advanced supervision training is designed to support clinicians working in mental health settings. You'll learn to supervise trainee and qualified low intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) staff in mental health support teams.
The course supports clinical supervisors working within mental health settings, supporting children and young people with mental health problems. Our clinical supervision training builds upon your existing expertise and supervisory practice. Typically, prospective students will have previously completed their own mental health training and gained accreditation.
You will gain an understanding of what makes for good supervision and what qualities are needed to become a competent clinical supervisor, incorporating pedagogical methods. Training is provided in two common types of supervision at a low intensity level, and we support trainee supervisor’s to put theory into practice.

Course lead
Mrs Sarah Monk is a trained cognitive behavioural therapist (CBT) specialising in children and young people’s mental health and low intensity working. Sarah has worked in a child and adolescent mental health service and is accredited by the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). Sarah is a qualified CBT supervisor and the programme director of the education mental health practitioner (EMHP) course.

Entry requirements
A 2:2 honours degree (or its international equivalent) in psychology or a related subject, with relevant clinical training and experience.
If you do not have a degree, you must have completed clinical training in a similar area.
For example:
- children's wellbeing practitioner (CWP)
- education mental health practitioner (EMHP)
- psychological wellbeing practitioner (PWP)
- cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
You must also be working in a mental health support team or a children and young people’s mental health service. You should either currently be supervising or have intentions to begin supervising low intensity CBT staff.
English language requirements
If English isn't your first language, you'll need to complete an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate your competence in English. You'll need all of the following scores as a minimum:

Course structure
This advanced clinical supervision course takes place over 12 months, from January to January. It is taught using both online and on campus teaching. The course has 2 modules. Module 1 focuses on the theoretical underpinning of evidence based supervision. In module 2 you will translate this in to clinical supervision practice.
Your theory module looks at what makes a rich learning environment and how supervisors can achieve this. You'll attend extra training days based on you specific experience. This will develop your understanding of specific CBT interventions and holistic approaches in school settings.
You'll have the opportunity to put theory into practice through observing supervision, and later conducting your own supervision guided by qualified university staff. You will receive regular feedback on your supervision from tutors and peers.
You will:
- analyse your clinical skills supervision through live observations and recordings
- receive feedback on your competencies using the SAGE tool
- attend regular University led meta-supervision
In addition it is expected you'll receive your own supervision to help navigate challenges and difficulties within the supervision process. Should you supervise trainees, the University will provide opportunities for you to reflect on the trainee educational mental health practitioners (EMHPs) progress and discuss any challenges within their training.
