University of Southampton India Centre in association with the Faculty of Environment and Life Sciences cordially invite you to attend our CW4B Webinar on mapping global populations by Professor Andrew Tatem.

Accurate, timely and detailed data on human populations and their characteristics are needed to support equitable and evidence-based decision making across the full range of government activities, and beyond. Unfortunately, recent, reliable and complete data on population distributions, demographics and dynamics can be lacking in many settings around the World. Population and housing censuses are typically conducted only once a decade, registries can be incomplete and inaccurate and household surveys provide a broad snapshot.

Professor Tatem will present an overview of the work of WorldPop (www.worldpop.org) at the University of Southampton on the use of 'novel' sources of data derived from satellites, GPS and cellphones to complement traditional demographic data sources in producing high resolution and timely information on populations. WorldPop focuses on the development of methods for geospatial data integration to strengthen the demographic evidence base, producing peer-reviewed and open publications, datasets and applications. The group consists of 30+ staff members and leads multiple collaborations with governments, UN agencies and academic institutions around the World, and is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank and UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, among others.
