New light on archaeological ceramics

19-21 October 2012

The conference was held in recognition of contributions to archaeological artefact studies by Emeritus Professor David P.S. Peacock. It was hosted by the Ceramics Research Group of the Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton, UK.

Professor Peacock joined the Southampton Department of Archaeology in 1968. His enthusiasm and expertise became instrumental in the establishment of ceramic and lithic studies as a branch of archaeological science; best known are his pioneering applications of petrological thin-section analysis to the study of archaeological ceramics and lithics. To this day, Professor Peacock keeps a keen eye on developments in the natural sciences that may benefit archaeological study of artefacts. In 2011, the British Academy awarded Professor Peacock the Kenyon Medal for Classics and Archaeology.  Earlier this year he received the Pomerance Award for Scientific Contributions to Archaeology by the Archaeological Institute of America. This conference was our own humble tribute to a familiar and inspiring figure of the Department.
