The University of Southampton
Interdisciplinary Research Excellence

EPSRC Healthcare Technology

an update from Dr Jon Williams, Faculty Research Manager

The EPSRC Healthcare Technology team visited the university on 19th May. The day had good involvement from top academics and early career researchers from FEE, FPSE, FNES, FHS, FoM and FSHS, as well as focus on the IfLS.

A busy day was arranged for EPSRC. It started with a Research Showcase of hand-picked interdisciplinary activity (see Photos), where EPSRC were able to see the breadth of research at Southampton, and how much of our research crosses between EPS and non-EPSRC research.

The Head of Healthcare Technology at EPSRC presented their strategy to around 80 academics, and one of the EPSRC team gave useful information on Impact in Healthcare Technologies. EPSRC had an opportunity over lunch to meet some of the rising stars as nominated by the Faculties, followed by one-to-one sessions for focused discussions. The day ended with two round-table discussions, one on Grand Challenges and one on the challenges of the translation of research to industry or clinics.

The day was very well-received, with very good feedback from both academics and EPSRC. EPSRC said that they were ‘wowed’ by the research that was presented to them, particularly commenting how impressed they were with the showcase. We could not have run the event so successfully without the cross-RIS support from Daniella Doncakova, Alex Mant, Claire Armstrong and Luke Goater.
