- Harnessing the power of Wikipedia
Dr Les Carr from ECS is a fellow of the Web Science Research initiative http://www.webscience.org and co-director of the Web Science Doctoral Training Centre http://webscience.ecs.soton.ac.uk/dtc/ at the University of Southampton. He will be talking about how we can best populate Wikipedia with University-related content in order to improve the institution's search engine ranking and hence its online visibility generally. Currently we are the 18th most cited UK university on Wikipedia, so we could do better in encouraging people to reference our work in the world's online encyclopaedia.
- Large data sets and modern mathematics
Jacek Brodzki is Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Southampton. He leads a research group investigating applications of modern Pure Mathematics, especially geometry and analysis, in a variety of problems emerging in Data Science and Energy. Apart from various projects in Pure Mathematics, his current work concentrates on scale-dependent geometry and topology of large data sets.
