  1. Harnessing the power of Wikipedia

Dr Les Carr from ECS is a fellow of the Web Science Research initiativehttp://www.webscience.org and co-director of the Web Science Doctoral Training Centrehttp://webscience.ecs.soton.ac.uk/dtc/ at the University of Southampton. He will be talking about how we can best populate Wikipedia with University-related content in order to improve the institution's search engine ranking and hence its online visibility generally. Currently we are the 18th most cited UK university on Wikipedia, so we could do better in encouraging people to reference our work in the world's online encyclopaedia.

  1. Large data sets and modern mathematics

He leads a research group investigating applications of modern Pure Mathematics, especially geometry and analysis, in a variety of problems emerging in Data Science and Energy.
