Event details

We are pleased to invite you to a lunchtime Interdisciplinary Learning seminar given by colleagues from the University of Manchester College: Dr Peter Lawler, Academic Director and Louise Walmsley, Administration Lead.

The University College for Interdisciplinary Learning arose from discussions during the 2007/08 Review of Undergraduate Education as a cross-University approach to the articulation and integration of the Purposes of a Manchester Undergraduate Education (The Manchester Matrix), complementing work taking place in core discipline areas. The name of the College reflects a commitment to an interdisciplinary learning environment building on the knowledge and experience that students bring with them. The College is a major contributor to the University's strategic vision where "all students will benefit from opportunities to acquire the core skills, knowledge and personal attributes necessary for employment and further study, and will benefit from the wider educational experience provided by the College."

Peter Lawler will discuss the development of the College's distinctive vision, the challenges it presents to disciplinary orthodoxy, the reaction of the academy, and how the ethos is being translated into a portfolio of course units.

Louise Walmsley will discuss the challenges inherent in developing a teaching and learning infrastructure outside the standard University model.

Refreshments will be provided.

Please RSVP to Laura Morley l.morley@soton.ac.uk by Thursday 31st May.
