Outreach Event: Changing Minds Event

Event details

The event is the culmination of an exciting and thought provoking project between SoNG and the Winchester School of Art. Fashion design and knitwear students have interpreted mental health conditions and diseases of the brain in the form of garments to challenge your understanding of the mind. Each design is based on the neurobiology of the specific disease it represents or the effect/impact of this disease. The resultant garments aim to stimulate conversations and public engagement to de-stigmatise and de-mystify mental health disorders. The fashion show will allow visitors to explore the views of 3 groups of people, the artist/designer and their perception of the illness/disorder, the scientist with a biological understanding of the brain and the experience of the carer or the person with the condition. The fashion show will be complemented by posters on neuroscience research and outreach projects that are actively pursued by the members of SoNG. The event will be rounded off by a public keynote lecture by Professor V. Hugh Perry entitled “How common infections affect the healthy and diseased brain”. Professor Perry’s research interest is contributing to a better understanding of dementia and in particular the processes in the brain that affect disease progression. He will discuss new findings which have important implications for the management and care of patients with dementia.
