Event details

Presented by Tim Leighton, Professor of Ultrasonics and Underwater Acoustics

Methane's per-molecule ‘greenhouse' heating potential is 20 times that of CO 2 , and globally, methane hydrate exceeds twice the worldwide amount of carbon in all known fossil fuels on Earth. Hear how acoustic sensors - amongst the most promising candidate technologies to pinpoint this potentially troubling substance - can also locate reserves of gas in the seabed and detect gas leaks from seabed gas pipelines and carbon capture and storage installations.

Please be aware that filming and photography will be carried out throughout the Multidisciplinary Research Week. If you would like to object to being filmed or photographed throughout the event, then please contact interdisciplinary@soton.ac.uk .
