Standing Up for Science - a seminar by Victoria Murphy, Programme Manager at Sense About Science
To round off January, the LSPS has organised an exciting academic talk from Victoria Murphy about ‘Standing Up For Science’. Victoria is Programme Manager at Sense About Science and coordinates the VoYS (Voice of Young Science) programme. The talk will take place on Thursday 29th January, 5pm-6pm, and will be followed by networking and food and drink. The talk will be held at the SGH, Lecture Theatre 1, Level B, South Academic Block and is kindly sponsored by PrimerDesign and Promega. A summary of the talk is below:
“Do you grumble to your friends when you see contradictory science stories? What should you do when you see scare stories in the media? Every day, we hear claims about what is good for our health, bad for the environment, how to improve education, cut crime, and treat disease. Some are based on reliable evidence and scientific rigour but many are not. These claims cannot be regulated. When one is debunked another pops up. So how can we make companies, politicians, commentators and official bodies accountable for the claims they make? If they want us to vote for them, believe them, or buy their products, then we should ask for evidence, as consumers, patients, voters and citizens. Victoria will talk about how Sense About Science and the Voice of Young Science (VoYS) network stand up for science”
