Communicating Secrets: learning how to communicate with non-specialists while discovering local marine life

Academics and researchers need to be able to communicate specialist knowledge to lay audiences, and there are calls for this to be incorporated into university courses.  These sessions would give a brief introduction to communicating specialist knowledge while also learning about the local marine life.  In the first session, Hampshire Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust would give a presentation on the ‘Secrets of the Solent’.  In the second session, we would analyse the language used to communicate with a non-specialist audience.  In the last session, the students would have the opportunity to put what we discussed into practise by sharing what they have learned about local marine life with the wider university community.

The academic organising this topic is Laura Duncan, Senior Teaching Fellow in English for Academic Purposes.
