Exploring multilingualism: when and how humans become language learners

Multilingual words
Multilingual words

This module explores possible situations in which humans learn a first or a second/third/fourth language. We will use different learning contexts to explore linguistic and social issues concerning the language learning task.

The module will explore monolingualism first, in particular how children around the world deal with the task of learning their native language. We will then investigate other possible learning contexts, such as differences between learning a second language in a classroom and during residence abroad. We will also discuss multilingualism as the result of migration for children and adults, and how learning an additional language during your life can have an impact on your native language.

The academic organising this topic is Dr Laura Domínguez, Deputy Head of Department and Director of Research in Modern Languages and Linguistics.
