In November 2016, Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States. He did so on a promise to ‘Make American Great Again’. But when was America great? To some, Trump hoped to take the United States back to the halcyon days of the 1950s, where the American economy boomed and the military power of the United States was unmatched.

This mini-course provides students with an opportunity to peer behind this nostalgic veneer of the 1950s, and examine the complexities and contradictions of one of the most interesting decades in American history. The mini-course will reveal that while on the one hand the 1950s was a period of peace and prosperity for many Americans, it was also an era defined by racial segregation, fear of communist infiltration and anxiety about nuclear annihilation.
