Dr Valentina Cardo at WSA will be co-investigator on a successfully awarded Turing Fellowship project, working with Dr Tom Irvine in Music.

Among other things, the project looks at political aspects of jazz as a 'social machine'. So, for example, Valentina will be looking at how/when music becomes a social machine in societies that have historically struggled with political freedom. In line with her work in co-directing our newly formed research group on Intersectionality, the project allows for an intersectional perspective by asking questions about the possibilities and limits of sonic “freedom” in real social, political and artistic contexts.
