This is Engineering Day

The first ‘This is Engineering Day’ was celebrated on 6 November 2019 – a day to raise awareness of what engineers really do and celebrate those who are shaping the world we live in.

A range of activities took place nationwide to celebrate the diversity of engineers and engineering and to commit to challenging the perception of engineering.

  • Over 130 organisations signed a pledge to increase the public visibility of more representative images of engineers and engineering
  • Over 780 images were donated to an engineering photo library - free for anyone to access and use https://www.flickr.com/photos/thisisengineering
  • Celebrities including F1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton, author and presenter Konnie Huq, astronaut Tim Peake and Great British Bakeoff finalist Andrew Smyth marked the day on social media, helping #ThisisEngineering reach over 12 million people on 6 November alone.

Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies, Susan Gourvenec signed the pledge, to increase the public visibility of more representative images of engineers and engineering, on behalf of the University of Southampton. Susan said “We’re pleased to join other universities and organisations in signing this pledge which firmly commits us to clearly reflect the breadth and diversity of our profession. Engineering is an exciting, varied and rewarding career, and yet the UK has a shortage of young people applying for engineering courses and engineering jobs.“

Susan marked the run up to This is Engineering Day with a social media campaign profiling the diversity of engineers and engineering, showcasing how engineers shape our world.
