A “Digital Maritime” event in early March celebrated the opening of the Marine and Maritime Group in the Data-centric Engineering Programme of the Alan Turing Institute, explored the University of Southampton’s capabilities in these areas, and workshopped project ideas for £20,000 of seed funding. The event was jointly hosted by the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute and Turing@Southampton and colleagues attended from a range of places across the University from the Maritime Engineering group, Web Sciences, Mathematics, Geography, Oceanography and the Library.

The event was opened by Tim Kent, Technical Director for Marine in Lloyd’s Register, who discussed the evolving landscape of digitalisation in the life of a ship. He discussed the ways in which ships are designed, operated and recycled with increasing reliance on Artificial Intelligence and data-centric systems.

Prof Peter Smith, Southampton Lead for the Alan Turing Institute, provided more information about the Alan Turing Institute and the beneficial links between the institute and the University, focused around the key themes of the Alan Turing Institute:

Innovate and develop world-class research in data science and artificial intelligence.
Apply data science research to real-world problems, supporting the creation of new products, services and jobs.
Train the next generation of data science and artificial intelligence leaders.
Thought leadership: advise policy-makers and shape the public conversation around data.

Prof Susan Gourvenec, Deputy Director for the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute and Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies in Intelligent & Resilient Engineering, outlined the challenges in the Marine and Maritime space. She focused on decarbonisation of engineering artefacts and the many exciting research opportunities that are available to improve the way we interact with our ecosystem.

Finally, workshops were run to determine what the key themes are in Marine and Maritime at the University of Southampton and a £20,000 pot was made available for feasibility studies in the area of AI or Data Analytics in Marine and Maritime. This competition will continue until 17 April 2020. Interested teams should contact P.W.Smith@soton.ac.uk and G.D.Weymouth@soton.ac.uk.
