IROE double presentation at BLS

Chair in Emerging Technologies for Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering (IROE), Susan Gourvenec, and IROE post-doctoral researcher, Jared Charles, presented at the 46th Boldrewood Lunchtime Seminar (BLS) at the University of Southampton, held on 12 October 2020.

The seminars, which have been held virtually since the Covid-19 pandemic led to many working from home, draw an audience of 40 or so researchers across various discipline areas each week.

Jared Charles presented work from his PhD on ‘Reconstruction of Soil Stress-Strain Response Using Optimisation’ in which a novel methodology was developed and validated that allows for the recovery of arbitrary stress-strain curves of undrained clays undergoing deformation. The methodology is based on finding the stress-strain response that minimises the gap between internal work (i.e. deformation) and external work (i.e. applied loading). Several existing techniques were utilised in the research, including Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) and mathematical optimisation.

Susan Gourvenec presented an update on activities of the Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies in Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering, revisiting the motivation and goals of the Chair and introducing new members of the team and a selection of projects from the first year of the award.
