Chair in Emerging Technologies in Intelligent & Resilient Ocean Engineering, Professor Susan Gourvenec’s proposal as Principal Investigator, Global comparative assessment of the role of oceans in a sustainable future won and stood out for bringing several of our university-wide priority partners together. The project aim is to lead the creation of a global network and community of ocean custodians for knowledge-sharing on ocean sustainability. The Southampton team includes staff across 4 Faculties – Susan Gourvenec from the Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences, Fraser Sturt from the Faculty of Arts & Humanities, Emily Reid from the Faculty of Social Science, and Robert Holland from the Faculty of Environmental & Life Sciences.  The team also includes Rebecca Sykes, Adjunct Fellow with the SMMI and IROE.  The first full project workshop is taking place at the end of January, and will lead on to local workshops and the opportunity for others at Southampton to get involved.  Opportunities will be promotes via SMMI and the IROE.

Now in its 12th year, the WUN RDF is an annual competitive fund aimed at bringing together researchers to undertake innovative, high quality, sustainable research that addresses global challenges to make distinctive progress.  These awards mark a direct investment in international collaborative research among WUN member universities of approximately £180,000.

The RDF 2020 thematic focus has presented the network with a unique opportunity to start projects that anticipate the major investments that will be made over the coming years, as well as to enlarge the impact and global recognition of WUN.

Peter Lennie, Executive Director of WUN, said “This year’s applications, focused on the challenge of sustainable recovery, were particularly strong. They show very clearly the value that diverse teams drawn from partner universities can contribute to solving problems of real significance.”
