IROE took part in this year’s Southampton Science and Engineering Festival (SOTSEF), the University of Southampton's annual science festival, which ran online across 10 days from 5 - 14 March.

The IROE virtual stand was in the ‘Our Planet’ Special session and aimed to raise awareness of how ocean engineers and ocean engineering influences and impacts our everyday lives and helps to decarbonise our society and economy to stop climate change.

The virtual stand included videos and downloadable resources highlighting what the oceans do for us, and what resources and services in our everyday lives come from or through the oceans. For example, did you know that 99% of internet communications traffic travels through submarine cables across our oceans? or that 90% of global world trade is carried by ship across the oceans? The oceans also provide immense potential for green electricity generation and sustainable food production.

Find out more about SOTSEF and the IROE’s presence here: What is brought to you by Ocean Engineers?
