IROE celebrates This is Engineering Day – highlighting the role of ocean engineers in shaping a net zero future

This is Engineering Day 2021

November 4th 2021 was the third This Is Engineering Day, an initiative launched by The Royal Academy of Engineering in 2019 to celebrate the engineers and engineering that shapes the world around us and to challenge the narrow preconceptions of engineering.

This year #ThisIsEngineeringDay asked "What will a net zero world look like in 2050 and how are engineers part of the picture?" The IROE Team celebrated by showcasing how ocean engineers are helping to reach net zero by providing offshore renewable energy.

The day showcased the role of engineers in shaping a more sustainable future - celebrating those who are working on this today and inspiring the future engineers who will help us make progress in the years to come. You can watch the video for #ThisIsEngineeringDay 2021 here.

How do you shape a better future

Last year as part of the This is Engineering campaign, The Museum of Engineering Innovation was launched to celebrate the often-unseen engineering that is all around us – to shine a spotlight on the engineers that are making a difference to our everyday lives.

This year, to help visualise how engineers are shaping a more sustainable future, The Museum of Engineering Innovation, recreated famous paintings of past land and seascapes to imagine how they might appear in a net zero 2050 world.

Susan contributed to a reimagining of Monet’s The Seashore at Sainte-Adresse, which you can explore along with the other reimagined artworks here
