ISLNE researchers Lawrence Singleton and Joe Tan recently presented some of their work at the 50th International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering, an annual international conference on sound and vibration.

Lawrence presented his paper on ‘Designing a Tuned-Shunt Electrodynamic Metamaterial in the Presence of Uncertainties', which explores the how active electrodynamic metamaterials can be used to effectively suppress vibration in a beam. Joe presented his work on ‘Wave-based active control for nonreciprocal acoustics using a planar array of secondary sources’, which proposes an active method of controlling wave propagation to achieve the unusual property of non-reciprocal behaviour. Videos of each presentation can be viewed below.

The conference was originally planned to be held in Washington, USA, but it was instead held virtually due to COVID travel restrictions.
