ISLNE researchers have published a new journal paper: “A robust optimised shunted electrodynamic metamaterial for multi-mode vibration control”. The paper has been published in the Journal of Sound and Vibration.

The article, co-authored by Lawrence Singleton , Dr Jordan Cheer , and Professor Steve Daley , demonstrates an optimisation strategy for the design of a shunted electrodynamic metamaterial, in order to achieve absorption of structural vibration in the presence of uncertainties. A Particle Swarm Optimisation was used to select the component values of series resistor-inductor (RL) shunt impedances connected to small electrodynamic actuators. The dynamic and electrical properties of a low-cost, readily available electrodynamic actuator were characterised experimentally, allowing the effect of variations in the devices to be considered in the optimisation. This work has demonstrated the importance of the variation in actuator electrical parameters in the design of an effective shunted electrodynamic metamaterial. The paper builds on the team’s previous work , presented at the 178th meeting of the Acoustical Society of America , which investigated the optimisation of passive metamaterials for robust vibration control.
