Dr Alun Gibbs is a Associate Professor in Public Law and Director of the Centre for Law, Policy and Society within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

Our undergraduate programmes offer a vibrant culture of partnership and collaboration between students and the academic community through research led teaching

I joined Southampton Law School in 2009 following the completion of my doctorate at the European University in Florence. I was appointed as City Solicitor’s Trust Lecturer in Administrative and Constitutional Law.

In 2012 I was made Senior Lecturer in Public Law.

Research interests

My principal area of research is in the field of constitutional theory. In 2011 I published a monograph with Ashgate based on doctoral work looking at the role of constitutional theory in understanding the emerging policy area of internal security in the EU.

Currently, my work involves advancing a theoretical understanding of constitutional adjudication based upon hermeneutic philosophy.

I am also currently engaged in a project looking at the relationship between transitional justice and constitutional law with the particular focus on empirical work looking at the role of constitutional courts and their legal reasoning in moments of constitutional transformation.

I am currently the admissions tutor for the PhD and MPhil programmes in the Law School and also I have responsibility for developing internationalisation links with particular focus on Canada.
