Dr A.M. Viens is Associate Professor in Law within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I joined the Law School at Southampton in 2013. I previously held a post-doctoral fellowship in Germany and teaching positions at Oxford University and King's College London. I have degrees in philosophy and law from the Universities of Toronto, Oxford and London. My main areas of research and teaching focus on ethics, legal theory and public policy, especially public health ethics and law. I also have a particular interest in the application and translation of ethical considerations into regulation, guidance and training for practitioners and researchers working in public health, global health and emergency/disaster management.

Research interests

My research lies at the intersection of moral, legal and political theory, with a focus on questions about the nature of normative reasons – with a particular interest in comparing the relative strength of these considerations, better understanding how they interact and influence each other and how they, ultimately, become determinative in establishing what we ought to do. I am interested in examining the role of law and morality as normative systems reflecting these reasons, and the way in which these reasons should function in guiding and regulating individual and collective behaviour – especially in relation to health, safety and well-being. As a result, much of my recent work has focused on different areas of public health ethics and law, as well as emergency/disaster ethics and law.

I also maintain research interests in other areas of health care law and ethics, including bodily integrity and modification, organ donation, neuroscience, reproductive and sexual health, biomedical research and methodological questions about how ethical reflection and guidance should be incorporated within medical law and public policy.

I welcome enquiries from prospective PhD students interested in undertaking doctoral research, and from potential applicants interested in developing proposals for postdoctoral research positions at Southampton in any area related to my research.
