Mr Francis Aldhouse is Visiting Research Fellow within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

From March 1985 until retirement in January 2006, Francis Aldhouse was Deputy to the United Kingdom's Information Commissioner.  He was admitted as a Solicitor in 1973 after training with the Manchester Corporation.  

He was the Commissioner's representative to the Article 29 Working Party established by Directive 95/46/EC and the first chairman of the Customs Information System Joint Supervisory Authority.

Francis was a member of the OECD Working Party on Information Security and Privacy and, for ten years, attended meetings of the Council of Europe's Working Party on Data Protection.

He regularly presides and speaks at training conferences and writes articles for specialist data protection and privacy publications.  

He is now both a consultant to the law firm, Bird & Bird, and adviser on public policy developments relating to information rights matters, especially privacy and data protection.

Francis graduated in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Oxford University and holds an MSc in Management Studies from Brunel University.

Francis was appointed CBE in 2007 for services to data protection.
