Lecturer in Maritime Law

Dr Filip Saranovic is a Lecturer in Commercial and Maritime Law and a Member of the Operations Committee of the Institute of Maritime Law (IML) at the University of Southampton. Filip is the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor and the coordinator of the IML's Wednesday Practitioner Series. He is a regular lecturer on the IML's world renowned Maritime Law Short Course. Filip is currently completing a book titled Freezing Injunctions in Private International Law (under contract with Cambridge University Press).

Filip was previously a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Cambridge for the LLM module "International Commercial Litigation".
Filip is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy having successfully completed the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP). In May 2018 he received an Academic Award for the Best Pastoral Support in the Faculty.

Research interests

Filip’s research interests are primarily in the fields of private international law, commercial litigation and maritime law. He completed his doctoral thesis on the private international law aspects of freezing injunctions at the University of Cambridge and was supervised by Dr Pippa Rogerson. During his doctoral research Filip was also a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School focusing on the theoretical foundations of jurisdiction and asset preservation relief including pre-judgment attachment and preliminary injunctions.

Filip has presented his research at numerous conferences both in the UK and abroad. In 2015 he delivered a paper on the international scope of freezing injunctions after the Recast Regulation at the conference “Jurisdiction and Arbitration in Commercial and Maritime disputes after the Recast Regulation” at the London office of Reed Smith LLP. In June 2016 he presented a paper on freezing injunctions at the London office of Norton Rose LLP. In 2017 Filip was invited to deliver a presentation on "The Possible Consequences of Brexit for Shipping Law" at the Hong Kong Maritime Law Association. Furthermore, he was invited to give a lecture at the University of Hong Kong on the overview of private international law in the English courts, focusing on the Rome I and Rome II Regulations. As part of the launch event for the IML's Private International Law Interest Group in January 2017, Filip delivered a paper on "Non-contractual Anti-Suit Injunctions". In addition to academic conferences, Filip is a regular lecturer on the Southampton Maritime Law Short Course since 2015. In April 2018 Filip organised a conference at Clyde & Co (London office) on "Jurisdiction and Arbitration Clauses and Direct Action".
