Dr Jingbo (Jenny) Zhang is a Lecturer in Commercial and Maritime Law and a member of the Institute of Maritime Law at Southampton Law School. Her research interests are primarily in the fields of international sale of goods, international trade finance, carriage of goods by sea and marine insurance. Apart from teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Southampton, she is also actively involved in delivering training to both academic and industrial partners.

Jingbo has published a number of book chapters and international journal articles. Her edited book Maritime law in China: Emerging Issues and Recent Developments was published by Informa on Routledge in 2016. In addition, Jingbo was invited by the House of Lords Select Committee, EU Internal Market sub-committee to provide expert evidence on the “Future EU-UK Transport Arrangements post Brexit” in 2018 and cited numerously its following report “Brexit: road, rail and maritime transport” (HL Paper 355).

Jingbo was granted the Faculty Dean’s Award for Early Career Academics in Business Engagement in 2017. She is elected as the co-convenor of the Contract, Commercial and Consumer Law Section at the Society of Legal Scholars Annual Conference in 2019-2021.

Research interests

Jingbo’s specific research interests lie in the law for financial instruments in international trade transactions such as letters of credit and demand guarantees. She also has a keen interest in English law of international sale of goods and its comparative study with the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).  She additionally has interests in the legal viability of digitalised products to replace the traditional financial instruments and shipping documents used in international trade and carriage. Moreover, with her background in international economics and trade, Jingbo is interested in conducting interdisciplinary research at the interface of economics and legal practice.

Jingbo has recently completed a PhD supervision on the topic of multimodal transport. She is currently supervising PhD students who are working in the areas of documentary credits and electronic bills of lading. Jingbo welcomes enquiries from prospective doctoral applicants in her fields of interest.
