Hi, I'm Neil Brown and I studied LLB (Law) alumnus and LLM (IT and Telecommunications Law) distance learning within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

I was attracted back to Southampton for a number of reasons. I thoroughly enjoyed my previous time here and had first-hand experience of the quality of the tutors.

I graduated from the University of Southampton with a law degree in 2004 and am now working for Vodafone’s global legal team advising on a wide range of issues affecting the development, operation and regulation of cutting-edge communications services.

I first gained an interest in the technical and legal aspects of computer science and communications during my law degree and decided I wanted to continue exploring this intriguing area through the LLM (IT and Telecommunications Law).

I am fascinated by communications and how technology applies to society. My goal is to enhance people’s lives by helping them create, communicate and share.

I was attracted back to Southampton for a number of reasons. I thoroughly enjoyed my previous time here and had first-hand experience of the quality of the tutors and the credibility and standing of the IT law department. Southampton Law School has a sound international reputation and its tuition is led by highly-regarded staff.

Also, while I wanted to study, I did not want regular face-to-face tuition, as this would not easily fit in with my hectic work schedule. The distance learning nature of this course meant I could incorporate studying around my work commitments.

The course is delivered through podcasts, downloadable reading and online discussions and chats. It is ideal for those looking to balance study with existing commitments, however, it requires determination and commitment to keep up regular study and complete the assessed tasks.

The programme has given me the opportunity to consider legal issues around communications in even greater depth and compare thoughts with other students. This has been valuable and enjoyable. It provides a good introduction to the key issues affecting communications for those who are less experienced in internet and telecommunications law, and is also a basis for more experienced students to undertake deeper or wider personal study.

Overall this course couples the flexibility of distance learning with the quality of tuition that one would expect from a highly-regarded IT law department.
